Bio

Jason Pu was elected to the San Gabriel City Council in March of 2013 and served as Mayor from March of 2015 to March of 2016.  He is a business attorney with his own practice and graduated from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and the UCLA School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree.

His parents immigrated to the U.S. as a young couple and worked hard to give their children the best educational opportunities possible.  He was born at Arcadia Methodist Hospital and grew up in Orange County where he became Class Salutatorian, Captain of the Varsity Football Team and a four-year member of Key Club in high school.

As an undergraduate at Stanford, Jason helped organize a coalition of students, faculty and staff as a founding member of Students Together Opposing Proposition 187 and helped to bring an Asian American Studies program to the university as a founding member of the Concerned Students for Asian American Studies.  He also worked with the Haas Center for Public Service, the Support Network for Battered Women and the East Palo Alto Community Law Project.  While at the UCLA School of Law, Jason worked at Public Counsel as a NAPIL/VISTA*AmeriCorps Summer Legal Fellow and was a founding board member of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Los Angeles County.

Jason began his professional career as a business attorney at Cooley LLP in Silicon Valley representing technology companies, banks and venture capital firms.  He also served as the firm’s Pro Bono Coordinator for FirstStop, a program of the San Mateo County Legal Aid Society providing free business and legal counseling to low-income micro-enterprises.  He then worked for a small firm in Santa Monica representing private companies and high net worth individuals.  Jason now has his own practice as a business attorney in the areas of corporate, real estate and finance.  He also devotes time to supporting numerous nonprofit organizations.

Jason has also served as the Chair of the McKinley Elementary School Site Council for the past 6 years and is proud of the progress McKinley Elementary has made in providing a 1-to-1 student-to-computer ratio, a STEM Lab with a 3-D printer, a Spanish language dual immersion program, intervention for its struggling students and community liaisons for parents who are not able to speak English.  His wife, Kathay, is the Executive Director of California Common Cause whose motto is “Holding Power Accountable.”  She was previously President of the McKinley's Parents as Educational Partners and their daughter is looking forward to graduating from McKinley to attend Jefferson Middle School next year.

Jason’s top priorities for the City of San Gabriel are to fix its public infrastructure including its streets and sewers, promote local economic development to attract mainstream businesses and create jobs, bring the community together through community events and maintain high standards of public safety.
